The most subtle details can have a tremendous effect on an object and the way it’s perceived. In this case, changing the beveled edges, ever so slightly, shifts the entire feel of the sculpture. A multitude of conceptual references are found in this piece: being built up and sanded down, beauty coming from pain, exhilaration found in adventure, outer polish combined with inner strength. This sculpture transforms a setting while simultaneously being influenced by its surroundings.
Each component in this piece is painstakingly hand-sculpted; the smooth exterior balanced by a rough interior. Encased in layers of metal with a mirror-polished pure 24 karat gold exterior, the spikes are suspended by 24 karat gold custom wire. LED lighting inside the components, and in the gold canopy, transforms the sculpture into a fully functional lighting piece.

Are there great artists that have been immune to struggle? Seeking adventure yet never fathoming how hard life would be; perhaps this is part of any great story.
Multiple renowned foundries insisted The FORGOTTEN sculpture would be impossible to cast in bronze. Countless stories core to the human experience are expressed: relentless perseverance, heartache and struggle, hope and fear, overcoming, and barely hanging on. Everything that has built up and led to this point has, at times, held back; it's pushed forward, tied down, yet there's still a fight to break free.
The ache of feeling forgotten permeates adventure along with the awareness of being “too much” and “not enough”. Hope is always present, cast like the metal in the piece, it won't let go as it strangles like wrapping roots. Tears of happiness, devastation, accompanying laughter and cathartic release all feed the roots that support and also restrain.
Painful words become valued, as they play on repeat year after year, and never allow for settling. Perfectionism comes from hurt and enables the extraordinary. Perseverance beyond what's considered “healthy” leads to breakthrough quitting never could. Brokenness can heal and beauty can come from pain. Like like, it's beautiful and ugly, orderly and messy all at once.
Ultimately, these things form character and fuel art in a unique and intriguing manner not otherwise possible.

Once housing the Kelly Kiefer portfolio, The CUBE traveled in its own seat on the airplane. Met with intrigue and curiosity during its travels and when being viewed for the first time, it reminds one of the dynamic effect the element of surprise can have when interacting with art. Connected with clients via word-of-mouth referral, the theatrical process of experiencing The CUBE gave viewers insight in to the Kelly Kiefer process and tangible exmaples of past work. The piece posed some logistical challenges: removing one to four of the panels on each side to reveal hidden vignettes beneath meant the Rare Earth magnets recessed (and finished over so they were unseen) had to be strong enough to hold the side panels on yet not so strong that they conflicted with one another or kept the panels from being removed. Like walking through a gallery, the time involved in experiencing the piece, answered questions and provided a deep, cohesive, understanding of the Kelly Kiefer work than possible at first glance.

As an artist Kelly Kiefer is always venturing into new media. Known for sophistication and attention to detail, Kiefer's work often expresses a darker, edgier side; edgy but still elegant, dark but still beautiful.
Kelly Kiefer's work is often interactive in more ways than one. One page of a fully interactive website viewable online several years ago when the Kelly Kiefer focus was on commission work: every page was designed and hand-drawn by Kelly. Working with the Kelly Kiefer team, the pieces in the image were coded to be fully 3D and the door on each page opened to an interactive mixed media film.
